Instant noodles, cheese snax, powdered butterscotch mousse, the gold dust at the bottom of the crisp packet…
They were the tastes that defined our youth and that maybe we left behind. But at this talk and interactive event, Flavour of the Month, they’re coming back in all their glory.
Odette Toilette and flavourist Steve Pearce invite your tastebuds to discover the art and science of flavourings. Explore how they work their magic to produce the formative experiences that stay with us forever. Relive your first sneaky taste of a neat strawberry jelly cube straight from the packet, or that strange-yet-addictive prawn cocktail flavour that sizzled away to nothing on your tongue (and that you later discovered featured 0% crustacean).
Hosted in the magnificent setting of the Museum of Brands, where you’ll find over 15,000 iconic exhibits including everyone’s favourite drinks and snacks, you’ll join a special tasting session hosted by Odette and Steve to sample the amazing ingredients that flavourists put together create the experience of strawberry, cheese or chicken – rarely available to try on their own.
Enjoy evening access to the Museum and go on a flavour trail round the exhibits to revisit the factory foods that defined the times. Tickets also include a drink and an instant noodle dinner.
About Odette Toilette
Lizzie Ostrom aka Odette Toilette is fascinated by our sense of smell. She’s hosted hundreds of events that open up the world of scent, from the aromas of outer space, to recreations of ancient scent rituals including mummification. Lizzie wrote a pop culture history of perfume, Perfume: A Century of Scents, and co-curated Somerset House’s exhibition on modern scent culture. She’s now bringing the same sense of curiosity to the world of flavour and its relationship with fragrance. Lizzie loves Monster Munch crisps (Roast Beef, none of your Pickled Onion) and will always accept a Mini Milk ice lolly.
About Steve Pearce
A biochemist and of the UK’s leading flavourists, Steve defines the flavours of hundreds of products we know and love. He founded Omega Ingredients, a flavour house based in England and the USA that provides and creates thousands of specialist materials to industry – their flavour recipe collection alone numbers well over 10,000. He’s also past president of the British Society of Flavourists. Steve regularly appears on broadcast media including Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped to share the science of flavour. He has fond memories of Banana flavoured Toffee chews from the school tuck shop.
